"Who is the patient?" I ask. My passenger his holding a shoebox with holes in the lit, and the destination is a veterinarian clinic in Inner Sunset. There is a faint earthy smell around the box. He pops the lit open. “Meet Margaret” he says. In a box is a tortoise of respectable size. There is no sign of movement. Her shell has attractive black and yellow, vaguely art deco hexagons, nicely offset by a lettuce leaf. “Great design” I say. “What’s wrong with her?” “She has been little sluggish” he says, giving the tortoise a concerned look. “What level of activity can one realistically expect” I ask? “This is an above average interactive species, for a tortoise,” he says. “She loves to come out and play—at her speed, that is. But now it’s like she has been depressed.” “How long have you had her?” “I inherited her from my girlfriend” he says. “When she left me, about six months ago”. “She left her behind? What happened?” “A frenchman. A frenchman happened. We were running an AirBNB. It all happened really fast. She now lives in Paris.” Now there are risks to AirBNB I have not previously considered. “Margaret is all I have now” he says I pull over to drop them off. But before they get out I lean in for a closer look into the shoe box. Just then Margaret’s head comes out and we make an eye contact. There is indeed a touch of melancholy in her wrinkled face. “She likes you” he says “she is coming out to say ‘hi’. “Maybe she is going to be OK after all.” |

A good driver is respectful of other drivers, always aware of their surroundings. A good driver is anyone who understands that all road users have a responsibility to each other to obey the law and the rules of the road. A good driver treats their passenger with care as if they are friends or family. They make sure that they bring you safely to your destination with a happy smile on your lips. You can even talk to them with random topic for you not to be bored. A good driver is trustworthy.
